The Soul of This Journey
ROOPKUND GLACIAL LAKE & TWIN BUGYALS EXPEDITION
Duration: 7 Days / 6 Nights | Trek Difficulty: Difficult (High-Altitude Experience Recommended) | Roopkund Lake Altitude: Around 15,700 ft | Region: Chamoli, Uttarakhand
About The Legendary Roopkund Trail
The Roopkund Trek is a legendary high-altitude expedition in Uttarakhand, celebrated for the mystical high-altitude glacial Roopkund Lake, the breathtaking endless alpine expanses of Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal, and awe-inspiring, close-up panoramas of Mount Trishul (7,120 m) and Nanda Ghunti (6,309 m).
Nestled deep in the Chamoli Garhwal Himalayas, Roopkund is also widely renowned as the Skeleton Lake due to the ancient human skeletal remains preserved in its glacial waters. Beyond the mystery, the route offers some of Asia's finest alpine grasslands, ancient oak forests, and demanding high-altitude trekking terrain.
Expedition Day-by-Day Schedule

Drive Time: Approximately 9–11 hours | Overnight Stay: Lohajung Guesthouse
- Start early from Rishikesh and drive along the scenic river highway of Uttarakhand.
- Pass through famous Panchprayag river confluences — Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karnaprayag.
- Reach the mountain base village of Lohajung and check into your guesthouse.
- Meet the trek leader, review the route map, check personal equipment, and rest for the journey.
Day 2 — Lohajung to Didna Village
Trekking Time: Around 4–6 hours (5–7 km) | Overnight Stay: Didna Village Homestay / Campsite
- Begin the trek along serene forest trails and descending mountain terrain.
- Descend towards the crystalline Neel Ganga mountain stream before starting the steady climb towards Didna.
- Walk through clusters of alpine trees and traditional mountain settlements.
- Stay overnight in a welcoming village homestay or designated campsite, experiencing authentic Garhwali hospitality.
Day 3 — Didna to Ali Bugyal
Trekking Time: Around 5–7 hours (6–8 km) | Overnight Stay: Permitted Campsite near Ali Bugyal
- Climb through dense forests of oak, rhododendron, and birch towards the high tree-line boundary.
- Emerge out into the sprawling, velvet-green high alpine expanse of Ali Bugyal, one of Asia's largest alpine meadows.
- Explore the expansive grasslands and take in magnificent panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks.
- Camp at an authorised, designated campsite near the meadow and rest under the starry sky.
Day 4 — Ali Bugyal to Bedni Bugyal
Trekking Time: Around 3–5 hours (5–7 km) | Overnight Stay: Bedni Bugyal Campsite
- Walk across rolling, undulating alpine meadows with unhindered views of Mount Trishul and Nanda Ghunti.
- Visit the sacred Bedni Kund area (subject to local preservation guidelines and permissions).
- Spend time resting, hydrating, and acclimatising before any further high-altitude walking.
- Enjoy the sunset painting the massive Himalayan peaks in shades of crimson and gold.
Day 5 — Bedni Bugyal towards Bhagwabasa (Only if Authorised)
Terrain & Access: Higher Rocky Alpine Moraine | Overnight Location: Subject to Legally Permitted Route
- The traditional route continues beyond the meadows towards higher, rocky and moraine terrain.
- Important Protocol: Any ascent beyond Bedni must be strictly approved under current regional access rules and evaluated for weather, snow stability, and altitude risks.
- If the higher Roopkund route is restricted or closed by authorities, spend the day on an authorised lower-altitude acclimatisation excursion instead.
- Exact distance and overnight location depend entirely on the legally permitted itinerary and weather conditions.
Day 6 — High-Altitude Excursion or Authorised Alternative
High Altitude Zone: Up to ~15,700 ft (Conditional) | Overnight Stay: Bedni Bugyal or Lower Camp
- Do not attempt Roopkund Lake unless access is explicitly permitted and cleared by the relevant forest and administrative authorities.
- If an authorised route is open, follow the registered operator's approved itinerary, safety guidelines, and mandatory turnaround times.
- Otherwise, carry out an enriching regional exploration and descend towards Bedni Bugyal or the designated lower campsite.
- Please note: This day is governed by mountain safety and regulatory directives; it is not treated as a guaranteed lake visit or summit day.
Day 7 — Departure: Return to Lohajung & Onward Travel
Trek & Drive: Descent to Roadhead & Transfer | Departure Base: Lohajung / Rishikesh
- Begin the descent towards the permitted roadhead, with the route following your approved itinerary.
- Transfer back to Lohajung base to collect stored luggage and freshen up.
- Arrange onward return travel towards Rishikesh / Haridwar with sufficient buffer time for mountain road transit.
